All Souls Day Mass is, in a very real way a funeral liturgy. The only thing missing is a casket with a loved one in it.
Praying for our deceased loved ones is an ancient Christian Tradition. We are reminded of that every time we pray The Nicene Creed together: “… and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come …”
Aside from formal church liturgies celebrating and honoring our deceased loved ones, we have our own personal ways of doing that too. I still keep a candle lit every day for my mom eight years after her passing. Every time I see that candle, I have a little conversation with Mom. I know she is still watching over us. Hey! Remember The Communion of Saints?
As we celebrate our dearly departed this weekend, pray for yourselves too. Pray that you are always comfortable in God’s embrace; that your relationship with The Father, Son and Holy Spirit is in good stead. Living like that takes away the fear of death, and strengthens your faith, your life, and how you live it. Every day, every breath is a precious gift.
