Franciscans Celebrate the Death and Life of St. Francis
“Where there is sadness…joy!
For it is in dying…that we are born to eternal life.”
(St. Francis of Assisi Peace Prayer)
St. Francis of Assisi died on October 3, 1226, surrounded by his friar brothers, and singing praises to God. He broke bread with his companions saying, “I have done my part, may Christ teach you to do yours.” And so it is with this that Franciscans around the world remember and keep alive the teachings and example of the Holy Father of the Order. St. Anthony Shrine Chapel was the setting and Fr. Mark Soehner, OFM, was the homilist for this year’s Transitus evening service.
The Feast of St. Francis followed the next day and St. Francis Seraph hosted the Mass with celebrant Fr. Greg Friedman, OFM. A delicious dinner was prepared for the celebration by SFS staff chef Scott Riehle. The local Dominican brothers and the Poor Clares joined in the feast.
