What is a Novena?
Novena is from the latin word novem, meaning nine. Praying a novena is a Christian tradition dating back to the earliest followers. There are no exact rules for praying a novena but many people choose to pray to a particular saint for a specific intention at a fixed time every day for nine days. Or perhaps once a week, or if a need is pressing, every hour for nine hours! Sometimes the same prayer is repeated, sometimes different prayers each time, or variations of the prayers are used.
At the St. Anthony Shrine, we celebrate the Novena to St. Anthony every Tuesday at 7:00 PM with a Mass and blessing with the St. Anthony relic.
A Solemn Novena celebrates the feast of a great saint. The Solemn Novena in Honor of St. Anthony of Padua begins nine Tuesdays before the Feast of St. Anthony which is on June 13.
